Vegan Tofu Smothered in BBQ Sauce Recipe

Vegan Tofu Smothered in BBQ Sauce Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 block firm tofu (14 oz), pressed to remove excess water
  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for baking)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika (optional for extra smoky flavor)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tofu:
    • Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the block of tofu in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and place a heavy object (like a cast-iron skillet or a can) on top. Let it press for 15–20 minutes, then cut the tofu into 1/2-inch thick slices or cubes (whichever shape you prefer).
  2. Marinate the Tofu:
    • In a bowl, combine the BBQ sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
    • Place the tofu slices or cubes in the bowl and coat them evenly with the BBQ sauce mixture. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes (or up to an hour in the fridge for more flavor).
  3. Bake the Tofu:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with olive oil.
    • Arrange the marinated tofu pieces on the baking sheet in a single layer. Drizzle a little olive oil on top of the tofu for extra crispiness.
    • Bake the tofu for 25–30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the tofu is golden brown and slightly crispy on the edges.
  4. Smother with BBQ Sauce:
    • Once the tofu is baked, remove it from the oven. Brush an extra layer of BBQ sauce on top of the tofu slices for more flavor and a saucy finish.
    • Bake for an additional 5–7 minutes to allow the BBQ sauce to caramelize.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the BBQ tofu on its own or with your favorite sides. It pairs wonderfully with coleslaw, roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or even on a sandwich or wrap.
    • Garnish with chopped fresh cilantro or parsley if desired.

Tips:

  • Crispier Tofu: If you want the tofu extra crispy, you can also air fry it at 375°F (190°C) for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • BBQ Sauce: If you prefer a sweeter or spicier BBQ sauce, feel free to adjust it to your taste. You can make your own by combining tomato paste, vinegar, maple syrup, mustard, and spices.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3–4 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer to keep it crispy.
