Ingredients:
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 4 slices of French bread (baguette)
- 2 cups shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese
Instructions:
- Preheat your air fryer to 370°F (188°C).
- In a large skillet or pan, heat the olive oil and butter over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they are caramelized and browned. This may take about 20-30 minutes. Sprinkle with sugar, salt, and pepper as they cook.
- While the onions are caramelizing, cut the French bread slices to fit in your air fryer basket. Place them in the basket and lightly air fry for a few minutes until they are golden brown. Set them aside.
- Once the onions are caramelized, transfer them to a bowl and set them aside.
- In the same skillet or pan, deglaze with white wine (if using) and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom. Allow the wine to reduce slightly.
- Combine the caramelized onions, deglazed liquid, and beef broth in a pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Carefully ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, leaving some space at the top.
- Place a slice of the air-fried French bread on top of the soup in each bowl.
- Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheese on top of the bread.
- Carefully place the bowls in the air fryer basket (you may need to do this in batches if your air fryer is small), and air fry at 370°F (188°C) for about 5-8 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and browned to your liking.
- Carefully remove the bowls from the air fryer using oven mitts or tongs, as they will be hot.
- Allow the soup to cool for a few minutes before serving to avoid burning your mouth. Enjoy your delicious Air Fryer French Onion Soup!
