MONTEREY SAUSAGE PIE

MONTEREY SAUSAGE PIE

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground sausage (breakfast sausage or spicy Italian sausage)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 bell pepper, diced (any color)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch pie dish or casserole dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Cook the Sausage and Vegetables:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked. Break it into crumbles as it cooks.
    • Add the onion and bell pepper to the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.
    • Drain excess grease and transfer the sausage mixture to the prepared pie dish. Spread it out evenly.
  3. Add the Cheese:
    • Sprinkle the shredded Monterey Jack cheese over the sausage mixture in the pie dish.
  4. Prepare the Egg Mixture:
    • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper until smooth.
  5. Assemble the Pie:
    • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the sausage and cheese in the pie dish. Use a spatula to ensure everything is well-distributed.
  6. Bake the Pie:
    • Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the center is set. You can test doneness by inserting a knife or toothpick into the center—it should come out clean.
  7. Serve:
    • Allow the pie to cool for 5 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, and serve warm.

Tips:

  • Spice It Up: Add diced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the egg mixture for an extra kick.
  • Cheese Options: Swap Monterey Jack for cheddar, Colby, or a blend of your favorite cheeses.
  • Make It Ahead: Prepare the pie and store it in the refrigerator overnight. Simply reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes before serving.
