Ingredients:
- 1 pound lean ground beef (or turkey)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 (15 oz) can of tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup reduced-fat shredded cheddar cheese
- 4 whole wheat hamburger buns, chopped into cubes
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef (or turkey) over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet with the ground beef. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Place half of the chopped hamburger buns in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Spoon half of the sloppy joe mixture over the layer of hamburger buns in the baking dish.
- Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese over the sloppy joe mixture.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining hamburger buns, sloppy joe mixture, and shredded cheese.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is heated through and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes to lightly brown the cheese on top.
