Turkish-Style Bread Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F/45°C)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Optional: Sesame seeds or za’atar for topping
  • Additional flour for dusting

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is activated.
  2. Make the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.
    • Mix until a dough begins to form. You can use your hands or a wooden spoon. If the dough is too sticky, gradually add a little more flour.

  1. Knead the Dough:
    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can add a bit of flour if the dough is too sticky, but be careful not to add too much.
  2. Let the Dough Rise:
    • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  3. Shape the Bread:
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide it into 4 equal pieces (for larger loaves) or 8 pieces (for smaller flatbreads).
    • Shape each piece into a ball and then flatten it gently into an oval or round shape, about ½ inch thick. If desired, use your fingers to create dimples on the surface.
  4. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a baking stone, place it in the oven to heat up.
  5. Bake the Bread:
    • Transfer the shaped bread to a parchment-lined baking sheet or directly onto the baking stone. If using, sprinkle sesame seeds or za’atar on top for added flavor.
    • Bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  6. Cool and Serve:
    • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Serve warm, with butter, or use it to accompany your favorite dishes.
