Classic Patty Melt

Ingredients:
For the patty:
- 4 lean ground beef or turkey patties (you can also use plant-based patties for a vegetarian option)
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the caramelized onions:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the sandwich:
- 8 slices of whole-grain or whole wheat bread (use low-calorie bread if you prefer)
- 4 slices of reduced-fat Swiss cheese (or your choice of reduced-fat cheese)
Instructions:
- Caramelized Onions:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add the thinly sliced onions and cook them slowly, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and brown, about 20-30 minutes.
- If you like, you can add a teaspoon of brown sugar to help with caramelization.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Patties:
- While the onions are caramelizing, season the beef or turkey patties with salt and pepper.
- Grill or cook the patties in a non-stick pan until they reach your desired level of doneness.
- Assembling the Patty Melt:
- Place a slice of cheese on top of each patty while they are still hot, allowing it to melt slightly.
- Toast the bread slices in a toaster or on a griddle.
- Assemble the sandwiches:
- Lay out 4 slices of toasted bread.
- Top each slice with a cooked patty and cheese.
- Add a portion of caramelized onions on top of the cheese.
- Complete the sandwiches with the remaining slices of toasted bread.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
